Floating Village

The Tonle Sap lake is a large body of water (Cambodian meaning "Large Fresh Water River," but more commonly translated as "Great Lake") is a combined lake and river system of huge importance to Cambodia. It is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia  and is an ecological hot spot that was designated as a UNESCO biosphere in 1997.

 

 1-Chong Kneas  Floating Village:

If you are already staying in Siem Reap, there are several tour companies that arrange boat trips to Chong Kneas. The packages are fully inclusive of transport and a snack, and the sunset cruise is certainly a good choice.

Thing to do:

Tonle Sap Lake is absolutely huge, and a boat cruise to Chong Kneas allow visitors to get a special look at lakeside life. Fish and crocodile farms are the main attraction in Chong Kneas for tourists is this farm that raises catfish and crocs. Chong Kneas' elementary school naturally floats as well, and is pretty cool considering the kids get to study on a big boat.
 

2-Kampong Phluk Floating Village:

The name Kompong Phluk  Translates to Harbour of the Tusks reflecting its past trade in elephants.  Kampong Phluk is a cluster of three villages of stilted houses built within the floodplain of the Tonle Sap about 16 km southeast of Siem Reap. Kompong Phluk is an attractive small community with a land village and surrounding mangroves. It is a place virtually untouched by time or tourism. Kampong Phluk sees comparatively few foreign visitors and offers a close look at the submerged forest and lakeside village life as yet unperturbed by tourism. The area can be reached by boat from the Chong Khneas or by a combination of road and boat. Make arrangements through our tour operator, By road/boat, take a car or moto to Roluos village just off Route #6 east of Siem Reap.

 

3-Kompong Khleang:

It is one of the largest settlements on the lake. Over 20,000 people live in high stilt houses which tower up to 10 meters over the river and the lake. It is a spectacular place which only gets a small number of visitors.There is a small island at the centre of the village which has a bustling market and one of several Pagodas, a School and Health Centre. The Pagoda has a brightly colored painting outside the entrance; depicting Heaven and a rather gory Hell; depicted very graphically. There are also carved stones from the remains of an Angkorian Temple which was once on this site.The kids are enthusiastic and cheekily pose anywhere a camera is pointed. Some are  quite fascinated by their reflections in the glass of camera lenses. They get very exited when the see their images in the preview screens of digital cameras.

4-Mechrey Floating Village
( Newly Discovered Natural Tourist Destination )

The unique hydrological phenomenon of Mekong and Tonle Sap Lake causes seasonal inundation of a vast floodplain around the lake. Due to its large area of water, this lake is very spectacular with lots of fresh water species and biodiversity sanctuary to supply for mankind and other species. Besides, the flooded forest in the lake stands as a natural habitat for all kinds of fish. More importantly, the flooded vegetation is a natural beautiful sightseeing afloat in the lake awaiting to warmly welcome all guests to visit and discovered a long hidden area named "Mechrey Natural Tourism"

Its beautiful paddy fields landscape is a true nature and standing along are Cambodian Typical tree called Sugar Palm trees.

In addition, you will see an old means of Khmer transport: Ox-cart and Buffalo-cart. Several of them will be waiting for you to tour and explore Cambodian life style in the village and its hundreds of years of tradition with natural scene along the way.
